Professional Tutors with Accreditation

Deciding on a tutor is a very personal decision. Where to look? What subjects to choose? Most importantly however, is to check that your tutor is an accredited tutor.

Your tutor should have an enhanced DBS check for working with children. This is a different check to ‘working with adults’ so when checking, ensure that you ask about the correct level of enhanced check.

Ideally, your tutor should be a qualified teacher with experience of working in schools and with a range of ages/levels of ability.

Most teachers will have had experience of teaching a variety of subjects, not just their subject specialisms. This is valuable experience as it enables your tutor to make connections across subjects, topics and texts.

Just as within the teaching profession, tutors who are professionally trained teachers have a Teachers Registration Number. People who choose to tutor and are not professionally trained teachers will not have this.

Finally, professional tutors will be a member of accredited body, ‘The Tutors’ Association’. A tutor has to have a DBS check to be a member. Tutors can also access up-to-date CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and safeguarding training as a member.
